NFL Jersey Sizing: The Three Measurements That Settle It
Men's, women's and youth jerseys are cut from three different patterns, and the tags look identical. Three measurements settle every sizing question — none of them is your usual size letter.

3XLThree patterns, one tag languageSizing, measuredEvery week somebody writes to us with the same story. They ordered their usual size, the jersey arrived, and it was either a tent or a tourniquet. The tag said the letter they always buy. The problem is that the letter means three different things.
Men's, women's and youth jerseys are not scaled versions of each other. They are three separate patterns, cut for three separate bodies. Once you know that, sizing stops being a guess.
Why one size chart cannot cover it
A jersey is a loose garment with no stretch, which means the fit is decided almost entirely by two dimensions: the chest width and the body length. The same letter across the three ranges can differ in both by several inches, because each pattern is drafted for a different torso shape rather than simply shrunk.
Men's sizing runs straight through the chest and the waist with a longer body, and it is the widest range we carry. If you normally wear men's sizes and you like a standard fit, order your usual letter and stop there.
Front
BackThe women's cut is a separate pattern, not a smaller men's
This is the single most common mistake we see. A women's jersey is not a men's jersey two sizes down. It is drafted narrower at the shoulder, tapered through the waist, and shorter in the body. The women's range sits at the same tier as the men's — but it is a different garment.
So if you normally wear a men's M and you want the women's cut, the equivalent is often an L or an XL. And if you actually prefer an oversized look, buy the men's pattern deliberately rather than sizing up in the women's one: it will hang the way you want it to.

Youth cutYouth sizing follows the age band, then the child
Youth jerseys are scaled by age band rather than by adult letter equivalence. The rule that saves the most returns: if the child sits in the upper half of an age band, size up. A jersey that is slightly roomy is fine. One that stops them raising their arms is not.
Below youth, the toddler, infant and preschool ranges are their own patterns again. There is no conversion from youth to toddler — read the age band on the product page and take it literally. Those are the smallest patterns we carry, and they are drafted tightly around the ages they name.
Tier does not change the size
One reassurance, because it comes up constantly: your size stays the same across Game, Limited and Elite. The build changes what is stitched onto the jersey and how heavy the body feels, not the pattern it is cut from. If you wear an L in Game, you wear an L in Limited.
The three measurements that settle it
If you are buying for someone else and do not want to ask, this is what actually decides it. Take these three numbers from a shirt they already own and like the fit of, then match them to the product page.
- Chest, measured flat across the shirt just under the armholes, then doubled.
- Body length, from the highest point of the shoulder to the hem.
- The range, men's, women's or youth — settled before either number matters.
Three numbers and one decision. That is the whole method, and it beats every conversion chart going, because it measures the shirt rather than the person.
If you are still unsure, size down in men's and size up in youth
That is the tie-breaker we give when someone is between two options. Men's jerseys are cut loose, so the smaller one is almost never wrong. Youth jerseys are outgrown quickly, so the larger one buys another season. It is not a rule from a chart; it is what comes back to us least often.

How do I know what size NFL jersey to buy?
Decide the range first — men's, women's or youth — then measure chest and body length on a shirt that already fits well. If you are between sizes in the men's range, size down; in the youth range, size up. The range matters more than the letter.
Do women's NFL jerseys run small compared to men's?
They run differently rather than small. The women's pattern is narrower at the shoulder, tapered at the waist and shorter in the body, so a men's M commonly translates to a women's L or XL. Do not convert down from your men's size — measure, or buy the men's cut deliberately if you want a loose fit.
Does jersey sizing change between Game, Limited and Elite?
No. Your size is the same across all three builds. The tier changes the lettering method and the weight of the body, not the pattern. An L in Game is an L in Limited.
What size NFL jersey for a 12-year-old?
A 12-year-old usually sits in the youth range, and if they are in the upper half of the age band we recommend sizing up. Youth jerseys follow age bands rather than adult letters, and there is no conversion from the youth range into the toddler or infant patterns — those follow their own age bands.
If you are between sizes in the men's range, take the smaller one. If you are between two youth age bands, take the larger one. Those two sentences handle most of the sizing questions we get, and both come from what customers tell us after the fact rather than from a chart.
